Mastering Surface Preparation

The secret to a long-lasting paint job across Indian homes is in the preparation. Learn the professional steps for preparing interior and exterior walls.

Why Surface Preparation Matters

Skipping surface preparation is the number one cause of paint failure. Without a clean, sound surface, even the most expensive premium paint will peel, flake, or blister within months—especially in the diverse and challenging climates across India.

Step 1: Cleaning & Scraping

Remove all loose paint, dirt, and dust using a wire brush or scraper. For exterior walls, washing the wall with water (or a mild bleach solution for algae and fungus) is highly recommended to ensure the new coatings adhere properly.

Step 2: Crack Filling

Inspect the wall for cracks. Hairline cracks can be filled with standard wall putty. For structural cracks (wider than 2mm), use a specialized flexible acrylic filler like K-Seal Crack Fill to permanently prevent water seepage and maintain structural integrity.

Step 3: Applying Wall Putty

Apply two coats of Delite Wall Putty to create a glass-smooth, bright white surface. Allow 6-8 hours of drying time between coats, and sand lightly with 180-grit sandpaper for a flawless finish.

Step 4: Priming

Never skip the primer step. Primer seals the porous putty surface, prevents the wall from absorbing the expensive topcoat, and blocks alkali salts from new cement. Use Delite Cement Primer for interiors and Exterior Primer for outdoors.
